When you are ordering a dress shirt or tie, keep in mind that cotton shirts and ties usually shrink by 1.5% to 2%. In other words, if you usually wear a 15 inches collar, a 14.5 inches collar size will have a much better fit after being washed.

1. If a Danini shirt is washed and dried can have a significant impact on the life of a shirt.?

The answer is yes. If you rarely wear your dry-clean-only shirt and only occasionally have it spot-cleaned by the dry cleaner, it won’t shrink as much as if it is washed regularly in water. However, if you are very careful, it is not impossible that the shirt would not shrink. But the shirt may shrink for other reasons so we suggest washing it in water and pressing it after.

Alternatively, if you wash the shirt and dry it on high heat in the dryer, you will see shrinkage that is much more significant and unpredictable.

Follow our washing instructions and you’ll shrink less than you would by using other methods.

2. Shrinkage happens only during the first wash?

Shrinkage happens over time, it is generally not sudden.

It should be expected that a shirt will lose 15-20% of its size after the first washing, and continue to shrink over the life of the shirt. It’s common for a shirt to be slightly smaller after 50 items of washing than it was after the first washing.

3. Which shrinkage impacts most, length or width?

Generally, shirts shrink more in the sleeve length than in the width. It’s most likely that your shirt will shrink in the collar, sleeve length and shirt length.

4. Why did my shirt become looser in the torso or sleeves?

Normally, the process of shirt cleaning involves soaking, wringing, and finally pressing. This results in water-based wrinkles that are difficult to get out unless you blow-dry your shirt immediately after it’s washed.

The problem is that when a cleaner pulls the shirts onto the press, the fabric is under tension in the width direction. This stretches the shirt out in the width direction, and then when the shirt is steamed dry, this stretch remains. This can result in shirts stretching 1-2% which results in shirts up to 0.75″ larger than they should be. Wash the shirt with colors on the gentle cycle for best results. Hang it to dry on a
clothesline on warm-heat or tumble-dry on low heat.
